Let's hear about those hunts and Upland Discuss Game Issues.

Varmit Control

Postby Ironman on Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:32 pm

Based on Thack’s "Threat" topic, and all the post against the predators that prey of Utah's Upland Birds, we should have a topic where everyone can post the tallies from their own control efforts on these varmits. Now we'll see how well we are doing on our part to preserve our game populations. So, get to it, go get 'em, Skunks, Red Fox, Coyotes, Raccoons, and feral Cats. Don’t forget to post up.

My dogs killed 6 feral cats and I shot 1 skunk in the last week.
I used to be a lifeguard, but some blue kid got me fired.

I saw a feral cat early in the duck season on the dikes of Ogden Bay WMA... but I had my wife along; who thought it was "too pretty to be out there."

They are found everywhere, I'd bet you've seen your share.
A Feral cat is a domestic cat gone wild....and believe me, they are just as wild as any "wild" animal. Just go ahead and try picking up a litter of young feral kittens, you'll look like you walked through cockleburs, except they are kittens stuck to you instead of burrs....and they bite, boy do they bite. Some feral cats are "wild" for several generations, not many are anyone’s pet that is just out causing problems. The easiest way to tell the difference is to take a bead on the cat, then call "here kitty kitty" If it reacts like you would expect a house cat then it's likely just someone’s cat out for a romp, if it reacts like you would expect a wild animal to react, pull the trigger. I've seen feral Tom's that are huge, easily 30lbs, and no fat, solid muscle bird killing machines.

I think the most important thing is every one ought to own a GWP/DD then you accomplish both predator control and upland game bird hunting...

One time I heard a story about a guy that had a cat problem around his house. He got some of them traps and trapped a bunch of them. He just happen to know a houndsman that wanted them cats.
I think one time the guy caught a 30lb tom if not bigger and it ended up beating up a few of them young hounds. There was a story around town that the houndsman said "I have faught Bears that did not have grit like that"!!!! From what I heard was that the feasco had made the paper in them parts....

52 grains of lead are much more effective than a DD/GWP.

Maybe but a DD/ GWP is much more entertaining.

Don't forget the WPG's! It's written right in their AKC standard that they like to floss with kitty tails  .

Really? How can something be more effective than 100%? I try and keep my GWP off them but when she finds one it's dead period, end of story. Being white she turns red. The only question is if any of the blood is hers.

6 cats
3 skunks
1 porcupine. (yes, she got it killed)
