Chukars on a lark?

Postby seniorsetterguy on Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:34 am

Anyone want to head out west (west of Orem/Provo) for a few hours this afternoon...impromptu...ahead of the storm coming in?

Call me: 435.602.9656.

UP, you guys have been getting a lot more snow than we have the last few days. Cloudy here, but no action.

Wish I could too. I just loged on to see if anyone could give me my chukar fix for the day.

I'm off all next week though.

We hunted hard out west this morning. It was real windy with on and off snow. We didn't see a whole lot of birds but the ones that we did see held pretty tight. We ended up with a few birds in the bag. Hopefully you will of had a little better luck.

We're heading out again next week for one final hurrah. If you don't mind running with a couple labs you're more than welcome to come along. We can keep them out of the way of your setters.

Brandon, you missed a real opportunity to contribute to my next literary effort...the Utah No-Chukar-Map.

Here's my report:

Shag and I are making progress mapping all the places in Utah where chukars do not reside. We were excited to find another one today. We were particularly gratified that our progress was not slowed by any chukar sightings, or sign, or points by the dogs. The day was perfect -- 100% chukarless. Here are a few pics to prove it. Of course, we were very careful not to photograph any landmarks or any other tells...we are very much against Not-Spotting.

Notice in this pic that Gus had made a nice cast, and is not pointing a chukarbird.

This is where we left the truck and began our ascent. No chukarbirds to be seen.

We worked high and low, just to be certain there were no chukars.
Image

No bird tracks in the snow...just Gus tracks.

Even when we were resting, we were still watching for them...none.

Honest, Guys! Dad's telling the truth. No chukars here. I wore myself out so we could make an accurate report!

You thought Shag's 2010 Field Setter Calendar was beautiful? Wait til we publish our No-Chukar-Map of Utah.

We'll be charting a couple more spots next week. Happy Hunting!

Well, the more places you mark off of the map the more your chances improve on the rest of the map.
