Why a TWH

Postby dow on Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:49 pm

Maybe this is a dumb question but why do all the trialers use TWH instead of QH or something else. I'm a newbie to the horse arena but I"m learning more everyday
I don't want/need a Facebook account unless I decide to change my life and start caring about other people.

The short answer is that TWH walk faster and smoother because they are gaited. A quarter horse has to trot to keep up and it really pounds the crap out of you after a full day at a trot!

TWH's are probably the most common but you'll see about any laterally gaited horse at a field trial. Occasionally someone will show up with a diagonal gaited horse like a QH but not often, not because there is anything wrong with those horses in terms of the physical and mental qualities needed, they just wear the riders out at the pace the lateral gaited horses can maintain. I've seen the occasional QH/paint that will move out darn good in a 4 beat flat walk - my neighbor has one that I can hear him coming and swear it's a TWH but he shows up on this fancy paint with its ears forward, head out and gettin' on down the road pretty fancy - it'd be a good one and I think is for sale.

I'm looking at a new foxtrotter this weekend - they've gotta go get him "off the mountain first". :D

I like the MFT over the TWH because of the looks. I hate big headed horses!

The best is a gaited mule and the best looking.

I have Paso Fino's, Gaited Morgans and Peruvian Paso's. For smoothness, I like the Peruvian Paso. For Speed I like the Paso Fino. For looks I like the Morgan.
