APLA Hunt Test at Lee Kay.

Postby Nasher on Wed Jul 28, 2010 1:23 pm

I just recieved this E-Mail about an APLA Hunt Test In September.. (American Pointing Labrador Association)
Thought I would pass the word along.
If your a non participant, I think it would still be interesting to see.. You'll probably see some really great dogs, and some not so great ones... Either way, I think it would be worth attending this event.

I would like to invite everyone out to Salt Lake City to the Lee Kay Center for a Full Stake APLA hunt test. The Test dates will be Sept 18 and 19th. We will run CPR and Master Saturday and CPR re-runs, APR and Master on Sunday. This will be a double master test. The premium for the test will be posted on the APLA website soon. If you need any info please feel free to contact me. Hope to see you all there!

Thank you!

That sounds cool! 8)

I have heard however that Lee Kay is not in any shape for running events in the Fall of the year...at least that is what the claim has been.

If can make it up that weekend, I'll come watch!

Sounds fun! Michah, give us some more details. Hopefully we get a real dry August and a super rainy early September to knock the fox tails and cheat grass down. From my limited personal experience at Lee Kay and from advice given from people who have much more personal experience than I, Lee Kay can be a pretty bad place to run from June through October/November or at least until the weather knocks down the bad seed heads...

Micah and Nasher, how is this for attendee's watching. I really hope to make it out to watch some of this.

Hey Travis, I'm not really sure who is behind putting this event together.. I received this Email from Micah (I think he got my Email address from the APLA website member list) but I have not had any correspondence with him other than what I posted in Italics in my earlier post..

So as far as details, I have none.. Someone near here(and that may be micah) has to be involved to put the test together and get it approved through the APLA committee. I also think it would be just fine for attendees to watch. As long as they stay in the gallery and not interfere with the testing, there would be no issue. Same as with any Hunt Test.

I agree about the training grounds, I'm curious also on what they are expecting..
I would have liked to participate, however my star player is out of commission due to his torn cruciate and recovering from his t.p.l.o.

Well I just got off the phone with MIcha, He is in Colorado at the moment and wont be back untill the 30th. He said he will give us a little more information when he returns..

He did say, he wasn't concerned with the grounds and everything will work out just fine.. Him and one other gentleman from Payson are the two who are putting this test together.. So far, their are 18-20 dogs participating.. The Judges may include Dale and Brenda Merrit of BearPoint Kennels. It would also be nice if Julie K could make it and bring some of her dogs here also..
I will pass along anymore information as I get it..

Hi all, here is a link to the premium for the Salt lake APLA test for entries and the premium. We are checking into secondary locations for grounds as well if the Lee Kay Center grounds are filled with excess foxtails and cheat grass. I hope everyone will come and check out the event as it will be a lot of fun. Please feel free to e-mail me or call me with any questions etc. I will post info as I get it as well

Also for those unfamiliar with the APLA I will give you a quick rundown. The APLA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the dogs and owners of Labrador Retrievers that point naturally. In doing so they have developed an organization to sponsor and run events such as hunt test like the one we will be hosting in Salt Lake City this fall on Sept 18 and 19. Ultimately they are looking for a versatile do all dog. A dog that can be used to Retrieve downed waterfowl and point, hold and retrieve upland game in the same day or have the abilities to hunt all species of birds in a manner that will produce the largest amount of downed game no matter the current season. The hunt test consists of 2 to 3 different tests depending on the level of dog your are running. They include and upland portion with land retrieving included in one series and a water series similiar to a Junior AKC test for the Certification Level. Upland has to be passed first. The advanced and Master levels have a Land series with double marks and Blinds and a Water Series with double marks and blinds then a Upland series. Chukar or Pheasants can be specified for the upland series for Certification and Advanced. Chukars and pheasants both are used in the Master Series to verify the dogs abilities on multiple game. Ducks are used for the water series in all Stakes. A dog has to pass all series both waterfowl and upland to receive a qualifying score in that event.

There will be room for spectators and people on hand to answer questions about this event and even an area where people can volunteer to help. I Would encourage anyone that has the time to come check it out.
The tests are really fun to watch, Its kind of a combined pointing dog event along with a AKC/HRC style retriever event in which the dogs have to do all of it.

Personally I love labs, This is just one more thing that allows me to enjoy the types of things these amazing animals can do. Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or information about the event or training. If you have a dog that you would be interested in running let us know and we will be happy to help you out. I have found the members of the APLA to be very supportive and encouraging to everyone as well and am pround to be part of such a neat organization.

Travis that would be great! Any help to get it off the ground would be appreciated. We have a targeted number of dogs we need to hit in order to break even on the test since the APLA is non-profit. So spread the word. Everything is on schedule so far. We will know by the 9th if we have enough entries to get the test finalized. Thanks again for the support
